Honoring Mendelssohn's 200th birthday this concert will be performed with full orchestra and soloists. Mendelsshon's first oratorio features choral reminiscent of Bach and recitatives influenced by Handel. Its text moves dramatically from the stoning and the martyrdom of St. Stephen presided over by Paul (Saul) to Saul's miraculous conversion on the road to Damascus and later on as Paul finds himself, in a reversal of roles, faced with the threat of being stoned.
