Poetry in Music

This concert is comprised of two "icons": Benjamin Britten's "Rejoice in the Lamb" and Maurice Durufle's "Requiem". " Rejoice in the Lamb" (1943) uses the delightfully mad and strikingly religious poetry of Christopher Smart (1722-1771) who was in an insane asylum when he wrote it.  "Requiem" (1947) is Durufle's most famous composition. It is based on Gregorian chant melodies which Durufle tries to "reconcile" within the requirements of modern meter.
