Lycoming Animal Protection Society (LAPS) was founded in 1992 in Montoursville, Pennsylvania.During its brief history, many animals have been protected and adopted from this small, no-kill shelter. In time, LAPS became a non-profit organization. LAPS continues to be a haven for homeless felines and would like to eventually be able to offer assistance to other animal species, as well.

All LAPS residents are given a physical at the veterinarian's office upon entry to the shelter. They also are tested for feline leukemia, kept current on their vaccinations, and spayed/neutered. If they are not old enough to be spayed/neutered before adoption, a certificate will be provided to a participating veterinarian who will perform the operation at no extra cost.

Hello LAPS,

We've been wanting to let you know how happy we are with our newest family addition.  We adopted Smokey Joe February 28th for our youngest daughter's sixth birthday.  We were so excited to bring him home to "meet the rest of the family" - which included 2 other cats, one dog, 2 girls, my husband and myself.  It's been quite a change for all of us.  The first week or so was a little crazy.  We would only "see" him a few minutes of each day.  He was VERY scared at first and would hide on us to the point it would take literally all day to find his new hiding spot.  Smokey didn't know what to think of the dog.  Having been with you for 3 years, I'm not sure if he had ever seen a dog.  I believe he just thought it was a really HUGE cat that sniffed him too much.  Things are great now.  This guy has so much personality.  And best of all, he doesn't hide on us anymore!  Sadly, 5 days after bringing Smokey Joe home, our beloved Bear ( our older cat) passed away.  Something we knew was coming - but you are never prepared.  The girls and I are happy that Mr. Smoke (as we sometimes call him) got to meet Bear.  We truly believe they are long lost cousins. Their similarities are uncanny - right down to a crook at the end of their tails.  Having Smokey here has made the passing of Bear more "bearable". We adopted Bear 12 years ago after the flood. He was a stray that stole my heart and will never let go. I can see now that the Smoker Joker ( he has many nicknames) is doing the same thing.  I don't plan on ever getting a kitten again.  These older guys still have so much love to give - I only hope more people would give the older guy a chance.  Thank you so much for allowing us to bring Smokey Joe into our home. I think he is as happy to be with us as we are with him - as you can tell from the picture.  This is his happy face after licking the milk from the cereal bowl - no milk mustache - but that is definitely a milk beard!

 LAPS Benefit Party

Catherine Jones of Turbotville isn’t your average third grader; well, we don’t think so, but you decide. Birthday parties are big among children, theme parties most of all. You get to be with all your friends outside of school, have a great time and get gifts! What more could one ask for? Well, Catherine decided there was more that she could ask for; she could ask for help for those that can’t help themselves. Catherine decided to host a skating benefit at Trout Pond Park in Muncy; however, instead of focusing on herself, she chose to focus on helping animals in need. Attending guests were asked to bring cat food or dog food in lieu of gifts for Catherine.

Catherine’s party was a success! Catherine and her friends had a great time skating and eating but the best part was when they presented 250 pounds of cat food and dog food combined to LAPS representatives. (You can visit our website for a photo of the presentation.) The cat food will go to LAPS while the dog food will go to Mostly Mutts, a no-kill dog shelter in Sunbury.

The names of the children who attended are as follows: David Witmer, Axel Murillo, Lauren Eurich, Corinne Thomas, Lexi Annulli, Lauren Bleistein, Darren Brown, Catherine Jones, Kade Meyer, Adam Kern, Natalie Lincalis, Madison Annulli, Aimee Singer, Terrian Harman and Tiffany Hartman. Miss Penny Price (third grade teacher at Turbotville Elementary School), Connie Hodges and Trout Pond Park Skating Rink also made contributions.

The volunteers and feline residents of LAPS as well as the volunteers and canine residents of Mostly Mutts would like to thank those that donated to our worthy causes. And a HUGE thank you to Catherine for this unselfish act. You are an awesome young lady!

BLESSINGS TO ALL!

Please remember all of the animals that depend upon your generosity for their very lives. This is a busy time of year for everyone and sometimes the animals tend to be forgotten. They still have their normal needs of food, medical care, and shelter.

As the economy tightens, LAPS knows that everyone is cutting back and trimming corners wherever possible. We realize that it is difficult, particularly in winter, to make donations but every little bit helps to make the lives of the LAPS residents more pleasant.

Please give whatever you can spare and know that you are helping to care for animals that would be
homeless without your generosity.

Many LAPS residents are described on the Petfinder website.
