Recent Bird Sightings

Ray Kozen observed ten Black Vultures in Limestone Township near the
intersections of Routes 44 and 880.

Feb. 15, 2010
Dave Ferry spotted five Northern Harriers and three Short-eared Owls near the
intersection of Mill Hill Road and Daughertys Run Road. He also saw a dark
morph Rough-legged Hawk along Paulhamus Hill Road.

Nate Fronk and Dave Ferry observed flocks of Horned Larks and a Rusty Blackbird in Jackson and Cogan House Townships in northern Lycoming County.

Dave Ferry has spotted a number of birds on his property in Old Lycoming Township, including Purple Finches, Swamp Sparrows, and a Palm Warbler. October, 2009
Kathleen and Dennis Hazlak noticed what they thought was a
Solitary Sandpiper near Hughesville.

Wes Egli observed many species from River Road in Muncy Creek Township, including Wood Duck, Osprey, Spotted Sandpiper, Great-crested Flycatcher, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Brown Thrasher, and these Warblers: Nashville, Yellow, Cape May, Yellow-rumped, Black and White, Northern Parula, Louisiana Waterthrush, Prairie, and Black-throated Green. Melinda Orr noticed Brown Thrashers along the brushy edge of her farm in Muncy. May 1, 2009
Kathleen Marabella spotted approximately six White-winged Crossbills (both genders) at midday
in a rhododendron shrub just a block off the Golden Strip in Loyalsock Township.

Laurie Cressman observed a Bald Eagle sitting on the ice of Rose Valley Lake.
She also spotted a flock of Red-winged Blackbirds and other species.

Jim Green had a great view of a Pileated Woodpecker in Williamsport's Brandon Park.
Pileateds are commonly seen in and near the hills flanking Williamsport's north side.

Dave Ferry reports an abundance of White-winged Crossbills feeding on fallen pine and fir cones at
Williamsport Area High School. They have also been spotted by Sheridan Elementary School in Williamsport
and at other locations with coniferous trees in and near Lycoming County.

Two fine pictures of Sharp-shinned Hawks in backyards were submitted; one in January by Alex Savakinas of Bastress Township and another in February by Jim Wright of Williamsport. January  - February 2009
On Lycoming Audubon's field trip to the Cogan House region of Lycoming County, we observed
one mature Bald Eagle, many Pine Siskins, Snow Buntings, and other species.

Dianne Peeling and Darlene Malichewski observed one or more Bald Eagles from River Road in Allenwood
on at least 3 occasions during this month.

An immature female Rufous Hummingbird at a feeder in Tioga County was the first winner of our Hummingbird Contest. Another picture. Note that this species is generally found in the western part of North America. November 1, 2008
