Lycoming Audubon Society's 2012 Events

These events are free and open to the general public!

Monthly program meetings in 2012 are held at the James V. Brown Library in downtown Williamsport.
Go to the Lowry Room on the 3rd Floor of the Library's Welch Wing, easy to find from the main parking lot just off Market Street. An elevator is available from the first floor.

January 18

Change is in the Wind: Dramatic changes in bird distributions documented by Pennsylvania’s Second Breeding Bird Atlas. Dan Brauning of the PA Game Commission, the Atlas' Director, will describe the changes including a dramatic decline of Ruffed Grouse in southern counties, a shift of Horned Larks from western to eastern Pennsylvania, and expansion of many big-forest birds southward.

Feb. 22

Rider Park: An area preserved for people to enjoy nature. Tom Schmick, Rider Park Manager, will show us the natural beauty of Rider Park as he discusses its history, geography, recreational activities, the trail system, facilities and improvements. Fred Stiner of Lycoming Audubon Society will discuss the progress and success of the Park's bluebird trail.
Door prizes: a Rider Park t-shirt and hat.

Native Plants that Birds Love: Which plants native to north-central PA are especially attractive to birds? Find out as Jim Green, avid home gardener and author of the 'Gardening for Birds' series in our Chickadee Chatter newsletter, discusses a variety of perennials, shrubs and trees to make your property more bird-friendly.
Books on gardening with native plants will be given as door prizes.

Rain Barrels: How can you reduce water runoff and also store many gallons of rainwater? Marcia Campbell, Master Gardener and Lycoming Audubon Society member, will discuss water conservation and the use of easy-to-make rain barrels.
Two completely assembled rain barrels will be given away as door prizes.

Thursday April 26 starting at 9 a.m.
Jacoby Falls Bird Walk: Meet at the United Methodist Church at the junction of Rt. 973 & Warrensville Rd. Come to enjoy the spring woodland birds and the easy walk up to the impressive falls. We should see Ovenbirds, Northern Waterthrush, and other species. Return to the church parking lot by lunchtime.

Peregrine Falcons at Montgomery: Bring binoculars and a chair as we find the latest nesting scrape of these incredible falcons. Contact: Mike Kuriga at (570) 322-1007.

Spring Warbler Walk: Ron Hughey will lead a woodland walk for spring Warblers on the farm of Gary Metzger & Joan Sattler. Meet in the Montoursville Walmart near Wendy's at 8:30 a.m. to carpool. Bring binoculars. Contact: Ron Hughey at (570) 435-3416.

Birding in Waterville: Larry Waltz will take us to view nesting Cliff Swallows feeding their young from the Pine Creek bridge, and will then walk up the Pine Creek Rail Trail to view a Bald Eagle nest! Vernal Pools and Spring Birding: Observe an abundance of plant and animal life around 13 vernal pools as well as warblers and other spring birds. Gary Metzger and Michael Gross of the Tiadaghton Audubon Society will co-lead a walk at the Gross property. Meet at the Montoursville Walmart parking lot near Wendy's. Birding for Beginners at Canfield Island: Co-sponsored by Lycoming Audubon Society (LAS), Loyalsock Township Recreation & Parks Dept, and J.V. Brown Library. Perfect for beginning birders and especially young people. Led by LAS members Fred Stiner and Mike Kuriga. It will be easy walking and over around 11:30 a.m.

Summer Bird Walks: Mike Kuriga will lead easy walks for both beginners and experienced birders at the Mosquito Valley Watershed (Williamsport Municipal Water Authority property) on June 20, July 18, and August 22. Meet Mike at the parking lot at the end of Mosquito Valley Rd. (just south of Duboistown) at 7 p.m. Email Mike or call (570) 322-1007.
